Disruption of White Matter Integrity in Bipolar Depression as a Possible Structural Marker of Illness

2011

Background: Diffusion tensor imaging allows the study of integrity of white matter (WM) tracts. Literature suggests that WM integrity could be altered in bipolar disorder. Heterogeneity of brain imaging methods, the studied samples, and drug treatments make localization, nature, and severity of the WM abnormalities unclear. Methods: We applied tract-based spatial statistics of diffusion tensor imaging measures to compare fractional anisotropy (FA), mean, and radial diffusivity of the WM skeleton in a group of 40 consecutively admitted inpatients affected by a major depressive episode without psychotic features with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder type I and 21 unrelated healthy volunteers f…

Detection of intracranial circulatory arrest in brain death using cranial CT-angiography.

2011

Background and purpose Computed tomographic-angiography (CT-A) is becoming more accepted in detecting intracranial circulatory arrest in brain death (BD). An international consensus about the use and the parameters of this technique is currently not established. We examined intracranial contrast enhancement in CT-A after clinically confirmed BD, compared the results with electroencephalography (EEG) and Transcranial Doppler Ultrasonography (TCD) findings and developed a commonly applicable CT-A protocol. Methods Prospective, monocentric study between April 2008 and October 2011. EEG, TCD and CT-A were performed in 63 patients aged between 18 and 88 years (mean, 55 years) who fulfilled clini…

Right bundle branch block and SIQIII-type patterns for risk stratification in acute pulmonary embolism.

2016

Abstract Introduction Risk stratification in acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is crucial for identification of patients with poor prognosis. We aimed to investigate the ECG alterations of right bundle branch block (RBBB) and S I Q III -type patterns for risk stratification in acute PE. Materials and methods Retrospective analysis of PE patients, treated in the Internal Medicine Department, was performed. Patients with RBBB and/or S I Q III -type were compared with those without both patterns. Logistic regression models for association between these ECG alterations and respectively right ventricular dysfunction (RVD), high-risk PE status and myocardial injury were computed. Results 175 patients…

Transfusion-associated chronic hepatitis C: alpha-n1 interferon for 6 vs. 12 months.

1996

Abstract Aims: To compare the long-term effects of brief and prolonged therapy with alpha-n 1 interferon for transfusion-associated chronic hepatitis C. Methods: One hundred and sixteen subjects (male/female 4868, mean age 46.9 years) were studied. Sixty patients were randomised to brief treatment (group 1: interferon 5 Mu/msq. t.i.w. for 2 months, then 3 Mu/msq. t.i.w. for 4 months), and 56 to prolonged treatment (group 2: interferon 5 Mu/msq. t.i.w. for 2 months, then 3 Mu/msq. t.i.w. for 10 months). All were followed for 12 months after stopping interferon. Results: The early response rate was 47.4% (Group 1 [45%], Group 2 [50%]). No "breakthrough" reactivations were observed. The early …

VBM-DTI correlates of verbal intelligence: a potential link to Broca's area.

2012

Abstract Human brain lesion studies first investigated the biological roots of cognitive functions including language in the late 1800s. Neuroimaging studies have reported correlation findings with general intelligence predominantly in fronto-parietal cortical areas. However, there is still little evidence about the relationship between verbal intelligence and structural properties of the brain. We predicted that verbal performance is related to language regions of Broca's and Wernicke's areas. Verbal intelligence quotient (vIQ) was assessed in 30 healthy young subjects. T1-weighted MRI and diffusion tensor imaging data sets were acquired. Voxel-wise regression analyses were used to correla…

Reperfusion therapy for ST elevation acute myocardial infarction 2010/2011:current status in 37 ESC countries

2014

Item does not contain fulltext AIMS: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) is the preferred reperfusion therapy in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). We conducted this study to evaluate the contemporary status on the use and type of reperfusion therapy in patients admitted with STEMI in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) member countries. METHODS AND RESULTS: A cross-sectional descriptive study based on aggregated country-level data on the use of reperfusion therapy in patients admitted with STEMI during 2010 or 2011. Thirty-seven ESC countries were able to provide data from existing national or regional registries. In countries where no such registries exist, dat…

Phase IV open-label study of the efficacy and safety of deferasirox after allogeneic stem cell transplantation

2014

This is the first prospective study of deferasirox in adult allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients with transfusional iron overload in hematologic malignancies. Patients at least six months post transplant were treated with deferasirox at a starting dose of 10 mg/kg/day for 52 weeks or until serum ferritin was less than 400 ng/mL on two consecutive occasions. Thirty patients were enrolled and 22 completed the study. A significant reduction from baseline in median serum ferritin and in liver iron concentration at 52 weeks was observed in the overall population: from 1440 to 755.5 ng/mL (P=0.002) and from 14.5 to 4.6 mg Fe/g dw (P=0.0007), respectively. Reduction in serum fe…

Release of necrosis markers and cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived microvascular perfusion in reperfused ST-elevation myocardial infarction

2009

Abstract Introduction The association of the temporal evolution of cardiac necrosis marker release with cardiovascular magnetic resonance-derived microvascular perfusion after ST-elevation myocardial infarction is unknown. Methods We analyzed 163 patients with a first ST-elevation myocardial infarction and a patent infarct-related artery treated with thrombolysis (67%) or primary angioplasty (33%). Using first-pass perfusion CMR, abnormal perfusion was defined as a lack of contrast arrival into the infarct area in > 1 segment. Troponin I, creatine kinase MB and myoglobin were measured upon arrival and at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 hours after reperfusion. Results Abnormal perfusion was detected i…

Magnetic resonance imaging of the pituitary gland in patients with secondary hypogonadism due to transfusional hemochromatosis

1999

To identify pituitary iron overload in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis causing secondary hypogonadism, we prospectively evaluated signal intensity abnormalities of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland of 18 patients affected by transfusion-dependent thalassemia major and secondary hypogonadism. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is useful to assess pituitary iron overload in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis and secondary hypogonadism by detection of a significant decreased signal intensity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland on GRE T2*-weighted images. The decreased signal intensity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland on GRE T2*-weighted images was co…

Posttransfusional, LKM-1-autoantibody-positive hepatitis C virus infection, cryoglobulinemia, and aplastic anemia.

1995

Aplastic anemia is occasionally caused by viral hepatitis, hepatitis C virus being the most important factor. Pathogenetically, decreased bone marrow function, abnormalities of the bone marrow microenvironment, and immune-mediated suppression of hematopoiesis are important. Hepatitis C virus infection is associated with a variety of extrahepatic manifestations including autoimmune features like cryoglobulinemia, Sjogren's syndrome, and autoimmune hepatitis. Here we report the case of a 42-year-old man with aplastic anemia due to posttransfusional hepatitis C virus infection associated with cryoglobulinemia and LKM-1 autoantibodies. Following a triple immunosuppressive therapy, there was a c…
